Abstract

Steering-Thrust-Posting Pragmatics (STPP) has four main components: steering thrust, pragmatic stances, conversational etiquette, and posting. (1) Steering thrust: The speaker, who generates the verbal act, steers hearers or readers towards certain pragmatic states to a certain degree. (2) Pragmatic stances: Positions or states towards which the generators and consumers of verbal acts steer the hearer. (3) Conversational etiquette: The norms governing pragmatics, including the normative obligations of both the consumers and, primarily, the generators of verbal acts. (4) Posting: A derivative commitment undertaken by the speaker in view of the verbal act and the norms of conversational etiquette. STPP covers a broader domain of pragmatic phenomena than traditional pragmatics and aims to show that pragmatic phenomena are much more pervasive than we have taken them to be.
